"Karelsky Okatysh", an open joint stock company, was established on the basis of the Kostomuksha mining, the construction of which dates back to 1974. It was a joint Finnish-Russian project.
In March, 1993, legal status of the company was transformed into the open joint stock company. The main activities are the mining and processing of ferruginous quartzite into high quality iron ore pellets.
"Karelsky Okatysh" manufactures about 30% of total volume of pellets produced by Russian enterprises, and about 40% of total volume of exported Russian iron ore pellets.
"Karelsky Okatysh" manufactures fluxed and unfluxed pellets of any customer desired quality. On the customer's requirement, the content of iron, silicon, limestone, basicity can vary, and also other components, improving metallurgical characteristics of the pellet, can be added.
Iron ore pellets of "Karelsky Okatysh" meet and to some extend surpass the world standards in terms of quality snd metallurgical properties. Due to the high-technology production, the pellets have an even grading compound, high durability, low content of hazardous admixtures and additions (5 mm grade).

"Karelsky Okatysh" is well experienced in creation, development and implementation of the mining know-how as well as improvement and modernization of mining equipment and ore technology.

The goal of invention is mineral concentration and enhancement of magnetite ore processing method.
"Magnetic desliming device" (Patent # 1669559, 2001684)
The goal of invention is the concentration and enhancement of concentration efficiency.
"Karelsky Okatysh" has a license for the mining of gabro-diabases in the "Taloweis" deposit which are unique and rare in terms of quality.
"Karelsky Okatysh"produces and offers to realisation:
- highly solid crushed stones of various fractions;
- Gelleflinta sand for water purification;
- Metal, wood, plastic and ferroconcrete products on customers wish.
The Kostomuksha iron ore deposit, the largest one in the North-West of Russia, is the main source of raw materials for the production of the pellets. The industrial stock of iron ore are 1,15 billion tonnes.
Deposit mining is realized by open mining method. The ore mass from the face is delivered to intermediary storehouses and therefrom in cars to the crushing-concentrating mill.
The quality of the ore mass during investigation, drilling and stowing is monitored by a system of geophysical probing before delivery of the crushing-concentrating mill.
Ore is crushed by three stages to grain size of 18-0 mm.
The technological diagram of the winning process comprises 3 stages of crushing, 3 stages of magnetic separation, 2 stages of coarse and fine crushing, 2 stages of slurry separation.
The technology is as follows: filtration, wet pelletizing, roasting.
The maximum roasting temperature is 1350 C.
High-temperature roasting ensures pellet high hardness and removal of 90-95% of the sulphur.
The ready product - fluxed and unfluxed pellets - are delivered either to the storehouse or loaded on hoppers meant for metallurgical combines.
The production capacity is approximated at (million tonnes/year):
Ore mining - about 20; Concentrate production - 9,3; Production of pellets - 8,84.

- Wall panel production unit, which offers 3 variants of one-stored cottages constructed with reinforced concrete panels by the Finnish technology.
- Affiliate "Kostomuksha pine" with foreign investments, which is specialized in the production of environmentally clean furniture according to the Scandinavian design and quality standards.
- Affiliate "Kostomukshskoe Pivo", producing an exclusive surface fermented beer "Richard"
- Fish-breeding enterprise, offering a trout.

The 1974 Government USSR makes a decision on construction of combine. In Petrozavodsk was organized the board of directors of be building Kostomuksha ore mining and processing enterprise (KGOK).
May,18, 1977 In Ministry of foreign trade USSR is signed the contract between the Finnish corporation "Finn - stroi" and "Prommashimport" about involvement of Finland in first-order construction KGOK and city.
August, 26, 1978 have begun of operation in career.
September 14, 1978 the Chairman of ministerial Council USSR A.Kosigin and President of Finland U.Kekkonen pawn the first stone in the base of the first building of KGOK.
July, 2, 1982 the first train with a trial party of 2800 tons of a concentrate to address Novolipetckiy of a metal works was sent.
August, 10, 1982 the first structure with pellets - 2,5 thousand tons to address a Chelyabinsk metal works is sent.
December, 8, 1982 a celebrations devoted first-order commissioning of KGOK. In a celebration have taken part the Chairman of ministerial Council USSR N.Tihonov and President of Finland M.Koivisto.
September 3, 1983 a beginning of deliveries pellets in Finland.
May 1984 is released 5 million tons of pellets.
November 30, 1984 is released 10 million tons of a concentrate.
June 18, 1985 of a celebration on case of completion of construction of the second and third queues KGOK.
March, 13, 1993 Kostomukshskiy GOK has got the status of joint-stock company " Karelskiy Okatish"
November 20, 1996 is obtained 100 million tons of pellets.
